James Monxhwedey, Founder & President Washington, DC 20012; gbawinliteracyproject@gmail.com
A son of the village of Gbawiin, James knows what it is like to struggle, survive, and thrive in abject poverty. He understands the needs of the village children and the lack of opportunities for a better life. As an educator, he believes in the power of education to change the life chances of children and lift them out of poverty. It is this conviction that motivated him to establish the Gbawin Literacy Project to promote literacy in Barsee-Giah Town. He is committed to making sure that the village children have trained teachers, diverse books, and learning supplies to become change agents in their communities, their country and the world. Larry Hoff, Treasurer Four of the five Liberians, who serve on Gbawin Literacy Project Board resettled in the US during the last 20 years. They all carry a collective story of Liberia’s civil war that began on December 24, 1989, took the lives of an estimated 250,000 citizens and drove perhaps that same number of Liberians into exile. Adolphus, and his wife ZT managed to flee the violence with their two young daughters and joined tens of thousands of Liberians who took refuge in Ghana where they stayed until relocating to Providence, Rhode Island. Aware of the destruction the war left behind, in his native Liberia, specifically in his own village, Adolphus often seeks ways to rebuild his country with a focus on education for young people. Therefore, he did not hesitate to volunteer his time on the GLPC Board. He is currently serving as treasurer on the Board.
